A Sino-French joint medical school was established in Shanghai on Wednesday to boost cooperation between China and France in medical education, research and training.

The Sino-Franco Joint Medical School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was developed from the school’s French class on clinical medicine. Students of the major will need to learn both French and clinical medicine.

Through cooperation with dozens of leading French Universities over the past 20 years, the school of medicine has sent 303 students to France for one-year resident training, as well as nearly 200 young teachers, doctors and nurses and students for various studying and training.

French universities also dispatched 257 professors to the school in Shanghai for teaching and lectures. More than 300 French medical students also received internships in hospitals affiliated to the school of medicine.

Based on successful cooperation in the past, both parties sought to further the relationship by establishing the new joint medical school. The joint medical school will become a major platform for Sino-French communication and cooperation, and will focus on the training of clinical medical talent and researchers.

Also on Wednesday, College de France, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and the Institute of Neuroscience under the Chinese Academy of Sciences signed a memorandum of understanding. The French college will send three professors in different majors to the Chinese partners for lectures and teaching every year, while Chinese students can apply for six-month internships in French labs.
