Two young people donated stem cells in the city on Monday to save leukemia patients.

The 24-year-old Wu Junxiang, a student at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, said the donation is the best gift for his upcoming graduation and his future career as a doctor.

Wu joined the city's bone marrow donor bank in 2014. He matched a patient in 2017 and agreed to give donation immediately. However, the procedure was unsuccessful due to the patient's own problem.

“When I was informed about the second match, I felt so lucky and agreed to make the donation without hesitation,” he said.

Wu is a volunteer at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center helping children with leukemia and knows first-hand how much such children suffer.

Another donor 29-year-old Wang Zhijun is a soldier and joined the donor bank in 2012.

Shanghai made 448 donations of stem cell including 20 to overseas patients. Some 160,000 people have joined the donor bank, according to the Shanghai Branch of Red Cross Society of China.
